Huotong is located in the southwest of Ningde UNESCO Global Geopark, 47 kilometers from downtown Ningde. It is recognized as a famous historical and cultural town in China and the birthplace of Chinese folk culture and art. Rich in historical heritage and with a civilization dating back centuries, Huotong is renowned for its skillful String Lion Dance and its well-preserved Ancient Streets Built in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Huotong River, renowned for its bends and turns, flows through the area. Huotong Ancient Town is built along its banks, boasting rich traditional charm and tranquil scenery.
As the “chief among the thirty-six Taoist sacred realms”, Huotong has fostered a millennium-old civilization since the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Here, Buddhist and Taoist cultures merge and flourish alongside commercial traditions. The Huang Ju Irrigation Project is recognized as world-class irrigation heritage, fully showcasing the wisdom of ancient peoples in water management. Distinctive local folk customs, such as the Lantern Festival on the second day of the second lunar month, are still preserved today.
Visitors may take bamboo rafts to cruise along the winding bends of Huotong River and enjoy the scenery. They may also watch the String Lion Dance, stroll the ancient streets, savor authentic local specialties like Baguo Glutinous Cake and Guangbing Cake, and fully immerse themselves in the unique allure of this thousand-year-old town amid its natural beauty and cultural heritage.
